Reasons to visit this beach-side family spot in Onrus

DIY waffles, loaded hotdogs, poke bowls, right on the beach

Last updated: Friday, 25 April 2025

A brightly coloured eatery on Onrus Lagoon, whose inventive menu far outshines its small town setting, is the dreamy seaside spot for creating new family memories. And its Waffle Shack downstairs is a nostalgic treat for all ages (there’s loaded hotdogs and a build-your-own waffle bar). Here are seven reasons to visit Milk on the Beach.

1. THE VIEW IS STUNNING

It speaks for itself. Milk on the Beach is located on Onrus Lagoon, a 10-minute drive from Hermanus.

2. RIGHT ON THE BEACH, TOO

It’s also right next to Onrus Beach, meaning you can head over to Milk after a beach day with the kids. Or have drinks and watch your kids build sandcastles. You can buy beach toys, swimming noodles and towels at Milk’s shop next to the Waffle Shack.

3. TOP SPOT FOR SUNDOWNERS

After a day of swimming and surfing, nothing beats a cold cocktail with your friends as the sun goes down and the evening sets in. This summer, there’s a mango margarita and a strawberry boozy slush. Who doesn’t love a slushy?

Besides boozy slushies, there’s also local wines and two craft beers on tap. Image: Milk on the Beach

4. ONLY PLACE IN ONRUS WITH SUSHI

Milk is the only restaurant in this small town that has sushi, and there’s other fresh seafood dishes like the traditional beer-battered hake and chips, spiced up with turmeric and ginger salsa, or the calamari hand roll with sushi rice, sesame, avo, wasabi mayo and pickled ginger.

5. PLENTY FOR VEGANS

Harvest Vibes zen bowl is a favourite, with avo, shimeji, carrot, cucumber, edamame, cherry tomatoes and spring onion. There are also vegan potstickers and vegan sushi, with a vegan coconut panna cotta made with agar agar.

Choose your base for your Zen Bowl - ginger sushi rice or a mix of quinoa and couscous. Milk on the Beach

6. LOADED HOTDOGS AND WAFFLE BAR

Down the stairs from Milk is the Waffle Shack. You can come in with sandy feet and try a loaded Mexican Chihuahua hotdog smothered in cheese, salsa, jalapenos, and nachos. There are also poké bowls.

Kids usually go wild at the build-your-own waffle bar with toppings like Smarties, jelly babies, Flake, Kit Kat, Oreo, and Bar One and Milky Bar sauces.

7. BRING YOUR POOCH

This dog-friendly restaurant is covered with funky murals of pugs and French bulldogs. There are doggie customers all over; as long as they’re on a leash and well behaved, they’re always welcome.

Because Milk is open from 8am, you can pop in for breakfast after taking your dog for a walk. The blueberry cheesecake French toast, topped with waffle churros, is just one of the curious breakfast options at Milk on the Beach in Onrus
